Hi ladies it's me again and hope y'all are doing well. I'm happy to be back with another blog today and it's called ''The Greensleeves Remakes''. In this blog I'm sharing another history behind another Christmas hymn called ''What Child Is This?'' But before I reveal the history behind the Christmas carol ''What Child Is This'' I want to reveal some history behind ''Greensleeves''. It was written in the year 1580 by Richard Jones and has been well known as an English folk song.It didn't reach popularity until the Elizabethan era (Queen Elizabeth 1) ruled when it became popular. The song is about a promiscuous woman looking for a lover! But in the year 1865 a man by the name of William Chatterston Dix worked as manager of an insurance company and got severely ill which almost caused him to have a near death experience. which caused severe depression. It's then that he saw his need for Christ and got saved. It was out of that that he was inspired to write hymns such as ''Alleluia Sing To Jesus'' and ''As With Gladness Men Of Old''.He wrote the song in 1865 after reading about the Magi in Matthew 2 and he also wrote it of the adoration of the shepherd and what possibly went through their minds when they encountered Christ in the manger talked about in Luke 2. The final verse is a universal appeal for people to accept Christ. In the year 1871, six years after it was written was when it was featured in ''Christmas Carols Old And New''. Since that time on the Christmas carol ''What Child Is This'' has been one of the most beloved Christmas carols since that time. Of course we know that the melody came from ''Greensleeves''. I'm so happy that William did the remake to that song changing a secular song to a Christian song! Side note I have loved listening to gospel artist Kirk Franklin and he is known for his original content but also changing secular songs to Christian songs such as ''Gonna Be A Lovely Day'', (original composer Bill Withers) ''Looking For You'', (originally by Patrice Rushen) ''Keep Your Head'', ''Let It Go'', (''Tears For Fears'' ''Shout'')(Earth WInd And Fire) ''September'' (Earth Wind And Fire'') and ''Declaration This Is It'' (by Kenny Loggins'') William's ideas to do remakes happened long before Kirk Franklin did that in the 1990s and 2000s! I hope and pray that this Christmas carol will cause us to marvel what the shepherds and wisemen were thinking when they encountered Jesus and cause us to worship Him and share His love with others. That's what I wanted to share with y'all. Blessings, Merry Christmas, and have a great week in the Lord!
